Ice fishing is the quietest thing anyone sells in Rovaniemi, and the listings do a poor job of warning you either way — that the quiet is the product, or that quiet is not what some groups have come for.
Sitting still is the whole activity
This is the one that separates ice fishing from everything else on this site, and it is worth being blunt about.
Every other winter activity here keeps you warm by making you work. Driving a sled is physical, and standing on the runners is most of why you are not cold. A snowmobile at least keeps your hands busy and your body braced. Ice fishing does neither. You kneel on a hide beside a drilled hole, you jig a short rod a few centimetres at a time, and you stay there.
Two things follow. The first is that you will be colder here than on any moving activity at the same temperature, which is why every operator in the comparison below hands out a thermal suit and why the fire matters more than it does elsewhere. Wear more underneath than you think you need, and take the mittens.
The second is the honest test of whether to book this at all: if the group needs to be doing something, this is not the one. There is no equivalent of the moment the dogs pull away. The middle hour is a hole, a rod and a lot of white.

Winter fishing on a Lapland lake is slow, the perch are small, and the guide has no more control over it than an aurora guide has over the sun.
So judge these tours on the things that do vary — how far from the road they take you, how long you get, and how good the fire and the guide are — and treat the fish as a bonus. Groups who book this expecting to catch dinner are the ones who come back disappointed; groups who book it for the silence almost never are.
What the extra ninety euros buys
Across the whole Rovaniemi ice fishing market on the day these figures were checked, thirteen products ran from €79 to €219 for what is, at every price point, kneeling on a frozen lake with a short rod.
The gap is not fishing quality. It is two other things.
Time. The cheap end is two hours, door to door. The middle and top are four. That is the single biggest difference in what your afternoon feels like, and it cuts both ways — four hours is a long time to be still if the appeal wears off.
Distance from the road. A minibus takes you to a lake with a car park. A snowmobile-towed sleigh takes you somewhere a minibus cannot reach. If what you pictured was an empty lake with no one else on it, that is the line item worth paying for, and it is most of what separates the €159 tour from the €79 one.
Neither is the better buy in the abstract. Two hours near town is the right answer for a first attempt or a doubtful group, and the longer trip out is the right answer if the silence is the point.

Snowtrail’s own page describes its ice fishing trip as private, and lists private snowmobile-towed sleigh transport among the inclusions. The same product appears on the Visit Rovaniemi marketplace under the title Small Group Ice Fishing Experience — at a web address that still contains the word private.
We could not settle which is current from the published pages, so we are not going to guess in either direction. If having the guide and the sleigh to yourselves is the reason you are choosing this one over the cheaper option, put the question to the operator before you book, and get the answer in writing.

Do you need a fishing permit or licence in Finland?
Not for this. Metsähallitus, the state body that sells fishing permits, lists ice fishing alongside single-rod hook-and-line fishing as a general public right that costs nothing and applies to every age, so the fisheries management fee that lure anglers between 18 and 69 must pay does not apply to a jigging rod on a frozen lake. The exceptions are worth knowing if you go out on your own rather than with a guide: the free right does not extend to rapids and running waters holding migratory fish, to areas where fishing is prohibited outright, or to a handful of special destinations that require their own permit. On a booked tour the guide has chosen a lawful spot and the question does not arise.
How young can children be, and will they last?
The published limits are lower than most winter activities here: Lapland Safaris takes children over two and Snowtrail from three, while Rovaniemi Insider does not state a minimum at all. The age limit is not the real constraint, though. A four-year-old is allowed on the ice and will be bored in fifteen minutes, because there is nothing to operate, nothing moving and no reason to keep watching a motionless rod. Families who enjoy this one tend to be the ones who treat the fire as the destination and the fishing as the optional part, or who pick the two-hour version rather than committing a whole afternoon to it.
Is it worth doing if you have already booked a snowmobile safari?
Check what you have booked before you add this, because the overlap is larger than it looks. Snowtrail's ice fishing trip reaches the lake by snowmobile-towed sleigh, and other Rovaniemi operators sell combined snowmobile-and-ice-fishing tours on which you drive to the lake yourself, which the snowmobile and ice fishing guide compares.
